Measuring Your Toilet Rough In
Before selecting a new toilet, you need to know your rough in measurement. The rough in is the distance between the wall behind your existing toilet and the bolt caps of the toilet, located where the toilet meets the floor. Without including baseboards or molding, use a tape measure or ruler to find the distance from the wall to the bolt caps of the existing toilet. Knowing this information beforehand will save you a lot trouble when it comes time to pick out your next model. For more information, check out the following video on how to measure your toilet rough in:
Round vs. Elongated Bowls
Bowl shape is one of your first decisions when it comes to choosing the perfect toilet. TOTO toilets with elongated bowls are more comfortable, making them a preferable option for most consumers. The majority of toilets in the US have elongated bowls. Round bowls, on the other hand, save space and are ideal in a small bathroom. However, the round option is much less common, making it harder to find toilet seats that match it.
Comfort Height vs. Standard Height
TOTO toilets are available in two different heights. The Standard Height toilet is almost 15 inches from the ground to the top of the seat. Alternatively, Universal Height, also called Comfort Height or ADA Compliant Height, measures between 17 and 18 inches from the floor to the top of the toilet seat. These toilets are becoming very popular in homes, as they are comfortable and favored by the elderly. Additionally, government regulations require toilets in public restrooms (essentially any outside of the home) to be at ADA Compliant Height.
1 Piece vs. 2 Piece Toilets
In the simplest terms, a 1 piece toilet contains a tank that merges seamlessly into the seat, while a 2 piece toilet uses an entirely separate tank that is then attached to the seat. Although the look and flushing systems of these styles are similar, price is the primary differentiating factor. 1 piece toilets are more expensive, but they are easier to clean and usually include a toilet seat. 2 piece toilets are easier to install and cheaper to repair, but are slightly harder to clean as there is a seam between the tank and bowl. Additionally, seats for 2 piece TOTO toilets are not included and must be purchased separately. Click here for a further demonstration on the difference between 1 and 2 piece toilets.
Choose the Style That’s Right for You
Those looking for a reliable, standard toilet can’t go wrong with the one piece TOTO Ultramax II or two piece TOTO Drake II. Fans of the modern aesthetic will be attracted to toilets in the Aquia and Nexus collections. And for customers who enjoy the finer things in life, the Neorest is one of the most luxurious toilets on the market. Popular amongst celebrities and CEOs alike, the Neorest provides a truly unique bathroom experience.
Choose the Flushing System and Water Usage That’s Best For You
Every toilet is measured by how many gallons of water are used per flush (gpf). Federal guidelines mandate new toilets must not use more than 1.6 gpf, though several states are have their own regulations of 1.28 gpf. In order to correspond with laws in any location, TOTO toilets are available in three flushing system varieties, each using a different gpf:
- The GMax Flushing System uses 1.6 gpf
- The EMax Flushing System uses 1.28 gpf
- The Dual Flush System allows users to choose between 0.9 gpf and 1.6 gpf with each use

Once you have perfected your TOTO toilet’s look and functionality, it is worth remembering that TOTO offers a variety of accessories that allow you to customize your toilet into something truly unique. The Washlet, for example, is an electronic bidet toilet seat that includes a water wand, nightlight, and dryer, and is even heated. Combining the Washlet with a traditional two piece toilet gives you essentially the same features as the TOTO Neorest for less!
If you are the type of person who appreciates a peaceful bathroom, the Soft Close toilet seat provides just that. It slows the raising and lowering of the toilet seat with specialty hinges to avoid accidental slams; these seats are particularly beneficial in high traffic bathrooms and homes with quiet atmospheres.
